Course Comments:
UNVEILING THE MACHINERY OF THE CELL PROTEIN STRUCTURES AND DYNAMICS. CELL FUNCTION THROUGH THE INTRICATELY ORCHESTRATED INTERACTIONS OF BIOMOLECULAR STRUCTURES, INCLUDING NUCLEIC ACIDS, PROTEINS, AND LIPIDS STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY CAN REVEAL THE GEOMETRY OF THESE BIOMOLECULES WITH ATOMIC PRECISION, ENABLING THE DISCOVERY OF THEIR STRUCTURE- FUNCTION RELATIONSHIPS. THE NEXT FRONTIER IN STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY IS TO STUDY THE STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONS OF BIOMOLECULES. IN THIS COURSE STUDENTS WILL GAIN HISTORICAL CONTEXT FOR STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY METHODS SUCH AS SPECTROSCOPY, X-RAY DIFFRACTION, AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS. WE WILL DISCUSS THE NEWEST DEVELOPMENTS BY READING RECENT PRIMARY LITERATURE REVEALING NEW INSIGHTS INTO THE FUNCTION OF ION CHANNELS, DNA REPAIR, AND MUSCLE MOLECULAR MOTORS. THESE DISCOVERIES WILL BE SET AGAINST A HISTORICAL BACKDROP, ENCOURAGING A HOLISTIC DISCUSSION OF THIS EMERGING FIELD'S POTENTIAL AND LIMITATIONS.

Supervised readings and group discussion. Prerequisite: minimum grade of 2.0 in either BIOL 350, BIOL 354, BIOL 355, BIOL 356, BIOC 405, BIOC 406, BIOC 440, BIOC 441, or BIOC 442.
