UW Biology researchers are uncovering how the extinction of specialized Hawaiian honeycreepers has reshaped relationships between native birds and flowers. Using motion-triggered cameras, the team documented shorter-billed birds “robbing” nectar from endangered Hawaiian flowers without contacting their pollen-bearing structures. The research offers new insight into how extinction can alter important interactions between plants and their pollinators.
