Biography
I am a PhD candidate and former National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. In my current work, I study the swashbuckling, drama-packed lives of hummingbirds in Colombia. I specialize in the use of what we call “biologgers”: miniature electronic tags (for example, tracking devices) that we equip to the animals themselves, to better understand how they go about their lives in their natural habitats. Storytelling and outreach are deeply important to me. I love to come up with fresh ways to share my research with people—including a bilingual board game, “Hummingbird Sugar Rush” (“Fiebre de Azúcar en Colibríes”)—to teach people about the decisions hummingbirds must make every day. As a former Jackson Wild Media Lab Fellow and fantasy writer in my spare time, I believe that creativity is an unlimited pathway to powerfully reaching audiences. Throughout my career, I've also studied owls (Canada), fairy-wrens (Australia), storm-petrels (Portugal), and songbirds (numerous states). If you're curious about any of my research or outreach experience, or just generally have any questions, feel free to reach out—you can also check out my website for an abundance of hummingbird footage!
